Sleep Apnea

Sleep Disorders

Serious medical, psychological and economic consequences can affect the undiagnosed and untreated patient with sleep disorders.  The most severe affects of sleep apnea have been associated with automobile accidents, cardiovascular morbidity, and even death.

Sleep apnea represents a significant problem for nearly 20 million Americans.  Many adults suffer from a wide spectrum of undiagnosed sleep disorders, but it is most prevalent among middle-age men and women.  While often associated with obesity, it frequently occurs in patients with other diseases such as respiratory failure, cardiac failure, hypertension, and neuromuscular dystrophy.   Left undiagnosed and untreated, these disturbances can have a significant medical, emotional and economic impact on patients and their families.  Accurate diagnosis is the key toward effective treatment.

Treatment planning and intervention

Recognizing and relieving pressure will help:

prevent skin breakdown
reduce the healing time of existing ulcers
lower the cost of treatment
reduce pain and discomfort to the patient

Pressure reducing devices
These devices offer an effective way to reduce interface pressure below what is encountered with a standard mattress.  They cannot provide pressures consistently less than 25-32 mm/Hg*, so they may have to be used with a turning schedule.   Examples of such devices include:

foam mattresses
gel/water mattresses
static air mattresses
foam overlays

Pressure relief devices
These consistently reduce pressure below 25-32 mm/Hg.  Examples include:

low air-loss therapy beds
alternating pressure mattresses
dynamic mattress systems
air fluidized therapy systems

A turning schedule should still be used for the patient's pulmonary benefit.
